Right Livelihood

Right Livelihood Award Presentation 2021

Right Livelihood was established in 1980 by German-Swedish philanthropist Jakob von Uexküll and has its registered office in Stockholm. With its Right Livelihood Award, the foundation honours and supports courageous people solving global problems.

The Laureates are from all walks of life and can be nominated by anyone to be considered for a Right Livelihood Award in an open nomination process. Right Livelihood recognises that, in striving to meet the challenges of today's world, the most inspiring and remarkable work often defies any standard classification. When choosing the nominees, it is of particular importance that the effectiveness of the work of potential Laureates is already proved. The work of the foundation is funded by donations.

It is remarkable that the award is only the beginning of a life-long relationship, which is characterized by active support. Besides international recognition and credibility, the Foundation offers protection for Laureates who are at risk (one of five are in need of such) and builds efficient and invaluable networks.

The Foundation has Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council, while also having office in Geneva. A pivotal point for Right Livelihoods worldwide actions and activities arose with the 2007 establishment of Right Livelihood Switzerland.
